Spike Train Analysis Network

Events

The Network hosts a number of events and meetings aimed at disseminating advances in data analysis to experimentalists. The most recent of these was the network's first Dissemination Workshop, all of the talks from which can be viewed here. Other previous events include an analysis masterclass in Synfire Chains and Spatiotemporal Patterns, more information about which can be found on the Network's wiki, and a workshop on Metrics in Plymouth.

Forthcoming Events

1st - 2nd September 2010, The University of Plymouth, UK

  • COLAMN 2010, From Cortical Microcircuits to Brain-Inspired Computing Hardware

This workshop is an open meeting of the UK-wide research cluster COLAMN. COLAMN aims at exploring novel computing architectures for cognitive systems based on the laminar microcircuitry of the neocortex. This serves two major goals: Firstly, to understand better the structure and functioning of cortical circuits, and secondly, to exploit computational principles found in the brain in cognitive software and neuromorphic hardware.

These challenges require an interdisciplinary approach integrating scientists across different disciplines -- experimental neuroscience, computational modelling, and electrical engineering. Accordingly, at the workshop we will have a mix of presentations regarding:

- Neuroanatomy of the laminar cortical architecture
- Neurophysiology of cortical microcircuits
- Advanced data analysis methods
- Large-scale computer models of cortical function
- Modells of synaptic plasticity and learning
- Cognitive modeling using large-scale spiking neuron networks
- Neuromorphic hardware design

21st - 23rd September 2010, Newcastle University, UK

  • 'Neural data analysis: learning from other disciplines' Workshop

The workshop will be very unusual as we aim to bring together scientists from a variety of areas who analyse complex data, with the aim of exploring whether their methods can be useful in neural data analyses. We are approaching: electrical engineers, seismologists and ecologists; those with experience in marketing and economics; and people working on road traffic and computer networks.

The workshop will begin with some brief didactic lectures by neuroscientists aimed at setting the scene, and making sure that all present understand some of the problems in neural data analysis. The great majority of the time on the first two days will then be devoted to presentations by scientists from other disciplines.

On the third day we will break into groups and discuss particular methods that might be applicable to neuroscientists. During this we will have access to computer clusters, running software such as MATLAB. Participants will be encouraged to bring example datasets, and examples of code which instantiates particular analysis methods. We hope that the third day will allow active exploration of what is possible, and seed further in depth collaborations.

If you are interested in attending this workshop please register here.

Further details of the programme will be posted shortly.

If you have any questions about registering or would like to find out more about this workshop please contact Edina Tozser, the Project Secretary.

News about future events will be posted here. To receive up to date news about the Network's activities by applying for membership.
